Everyone who wants to learn more about life in Västerbotten and its history should visit Västerbottens museum.

It tells how the Sami people populated the forests and mountains, how fishing peoples lived along the coast and about the importance of skis as a form of transport in this region. It even has the world’s oldest ski, which is older than the Egyptian pyramids!

The open-air museum has around 40 buildings from the county, including a typical Västerbotten farmhouse, bakery and threshing house. The most recent additions are three different types of Sami “kåta” that are timbered and built using peat, in accordance with examples from around Västerbotten. In the summer, the buildings at the open-air museum are staffed with stewards in period clothing. Children are welcome to help with tasks on the farm. Old native breeds graze the fields and there are daily guided tours, horse and carriage rides and creative activities for children.

The museum also houses temporary exhibitions in the fields of heritage, art and photography. There are scheduled activities throughout the year, with traditional celebrations on Sweden’s National Day, Midsummer and the second week of Advent, when the Christmas Market is held.
